NO
General
🇺🇸 Does the program carry forward last year's bank account? NO
No. Carryforward NEVER brings bank information. It brings the client's information (name, dependents, etc.), but the
account and routing numbers must be typed in every year. This is the same in
Desktop and
Online.
👉 That is why you should
always check the account before you transmit, even when everything else is already filled in.
If the refund already went into the wrong account:- Bank product: let us know first — sometimes something can be done through the bank.
- E-file with direct deposit: the money has already left the IRS. You have to call the IRS directly and ask how to correct it.
- What actually worked (a real case from a preparer in our group): a letter to the IRS ACH department listing both the correct and the incorrect account, with help from Problem Resolution and the Taxpayer Advocate. It took a while, but the money was recovered.
- At the same time, the client can call their own bank: if the deposit landed in an account that is not theirs, the bank can send it back. That is usually the fastest route.
