«Attach Schedule X to your completed amended tax returns: Form 540…, Form 540NR…, or Form 540 2EZ».
«Amended returns (this tax year and past two years)»,
correo.
🖥️
En el programa,
antes de hacer cualquier cambio: en la
CA 540 marque
«Check if this is an amended return», y en el
CA Sch X marque
«Check this box to override line 2 and line 5, before making changes to any forms».
D-400 Schedule AM. NCDOR:
«fill in the "Amended Return" circle located at the top right of Form D-400. Attach Form D-400 Schedule AM».
Página oficial de NCDOR →🗽 New Jersey — residentes:
NJ-1040X del año que corresponde; no residentes: la
NJ-1040-NR con la palabra «Amended». El estado dice:
«Currently, we only provide a paper option for filing an amended return.»

🇺🇸 🗺️ STATE amended returns: which form each state uses (CA, NC, NJ…) and whether it can be e-filed
The
state amendment is separate from the federal one (
1040X →): each state has its own form and rules, and not all of them allow e-filing it.
1) Can the program e-file it? — check it in TaxWiseOn the
TaxWise Support Site, the
«Taxwise Form Status» page lists every form for each state.
(When you open it, it asks you to sign in: choose Taxwise Support → Continue and enter your Client ID, Username and password.) Choose the
Jurisdiction (state) and the
Year, and search for the amended form (for example, type
x). The
E-File Supported column tells you whether it can be e-filed; if it says
No, you print it and mail it. The
Current Status column tells you whether the form is already available for that year.
2) Examples by state(taken from each state's official pages)
🌴 California — there is no «540X» for recent years: you prepare a
corrected Form 540 (or 540NR / 540 2EZ) and attach
Schedule X, which explains each change. The FTB says:
«Attach Schedule X to your completed amended tax returns: Form 540…, Form 540NR…, or Form 540 2EZ». It also asks you to explain each change in detail and attach supporting documents. In the TaxWise form table,
CA Sch X shows
E-File Supported: Yes. And the FTB confirms it: amended returns can be e-filed for the
current year and the 2 previous years (
«Amended returns (this tax year and past two years)»,
FTB →); older years go by
mail.
🖥️
In the program,
before making any change: on
CA 540 check
«Check if this is an amended return», and on
CA Sch X check
«Check this box to override line 2 and line 5, before making changes to any forms». (On the federal side, the override box on the
1040-X.)
By mail it goes to: Franchise Tax Board, PO Box 942867, Sacramento, CA 94267-0001.
Schedule X instructions (FTB) →⚠️ Schedule X changes every year: use the one for the year you are amending.
🌲 North Carolina — for recent years you use the same
Form D-400, fill in the
«Amended Return» circle and attach
D-400 Schedule AM. NCDOR:
«fill in the "Amended Return" circle located at the top right of Form D-400. Attach Form D-400 Schedule AM». If the federal return was amended too, include a copy of the 1040X. (Older years used Form D-400X.)
Official NCDOR page →🗽 New Jersey — residents:
NJ-1040X for the matching year; nonresidents:
NJ-1040-NR marked «Amended». The state says:
«Currently, we only provide a paper option for filing an amended return.» Include all supporting documents (schedules, W-2, 1099), even if they did not change.
Official NJ Taxation page →🚫 Texas, Nevada and Florida — they have no state personal income tax, so there is no individual state amendment.
