Si no pagas: corren
intereses y

🇺🇸 📅 2026 tax filing deadlines and what the extension covers
Deadlines for tax year 2025 (filed in 2026):| Date | What is due |
|---|
| March 16 | 1065 (partnerships) and 1120-S (S-corps) — file or request an extension |
| April 15 | 1040 (individuals), 1120 (C-corps) and 1041 — file or request an extension |
| September 15 | 1065 and 1120-S that requested an extension |
| October 15 | 1040 and 1120 (C-corps) that requested an extension |
March and April are for
filing or requesting an extension. September and October are the final dates for those who
already requested one.
⚠️ The key thing about extensions: an extension gives you more time to
FILE,
NOT to PAY. If you owe tax, you must pay by the original date (March 16 or April 15). If you do not:
interest and a
late-payment penalty apply even with an approved extension. What the extension does save you is the
late-filing penalty, which is usually the more expensive one.
Can you file later? Yes — you can transmit any time
while e-file is open. E-file
closes around November and reopens when the season starts (January). But filing after the deadline counts as
late.
📌 If the date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, it moves to the next business day — that is why 2026 is March 16, not the 15th.⭐
And one almost nobody has in mind: October 20. For the 2026 season 1040, the IRS publishes
October 15, 2026 as the last day to
transmit returns on extension, but allows until
October 20, 2026 to
RETRANSMIT ones that came back
rejected, late, or on extension. So if one rejects on the 14th or 15th, there are still five days to fix it and send it again.
1040 MeF due dates (IRS) →⭐
And for BUSINESS returns the period is different — and longer. When a
1065 or
1120-S rejects, there are
10 calendar days counted from the
first reject (not from the due date) to get it
accepted; if you do, the IRS counts it as filed on that first reject date. So an 1120-S that rejects on
September 15 has until the
25th. For the 1040 it is
5 days counted from the due date — which is why there is a fixed date there.
