🇺🇸 🏦 State refund deposited into the wrong account
If the
state refund was deposited into the wrong account, first find out whether that refund went through a
bank product.
1️⃣ Did the state refund go through a bank product?- Yes (state refund by checking here was marked on the bank application): the deposit went through the bank product's bank. Write to us with the taxpayer's name and we'll look into it.
- No (the state deposited it directly into the account entered on the return): there is no bank product tied to that refund, so we have no way to verify it. The taxpayer must contact the state directly.
2️⃣ Check the account entered on the returnCompare the
routing and
account number on the return with the taxpayer's, and have that information ready when calling the state.
3️⃣ California (FTB)The official Form 540 instructions say:
- The FTB is not responsible for a lost refund due to incorrect account information entered by the taxpayer or their representative.
- Before depositing, the FTB may verify with the bank that the name on the account matches the name on the return.
- If the bank rejects the direct deposit, the FTB issues a paper check.
To check the refund:
ftb.ca.gov → Refund status, or the FTB's automated phone service at
800-338-0505.
Other states: the taxpayer calls their state's tax agency.
